The Central Ohio Hoover Sailing Club

If you are interested in sailing and live in Central Ohio Hoover Sailing Club is the place to be! Located on Hoover Reservoir, the Hoover Sailing Club has something for everyone. Hoover Sailing Club offers classes to teach and develop an interest in sailing for both youth and adults. If you are further interested and want to help crew on a boat to learn more you can do that as well. Hoover Sailing Club offers Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon racing throughout the season, as well as, has regattas for individual fleets. The Fleets at the club include the 505, Flying Scot, Highlander, Interlake, Laser, MC Scow, Snipe, Thistle, and Windmill.

I started at Hoover Sailing Club three years ago taking classes and now have an Interlake. Though I have found it difficult to find time to spend sailing at the club I have enjoyed meeting new people and spending time on the water though this year my time has been limited. I do have a month or so left to get out on the water so I am going to have to take advantage before the weather shifts!

These photos were taken last Sunday while I was on race committee, one of the responsibilities of being a member. A couple hours on the rescue boat watching others sail is still not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

If you are interested in learning more check out http://www.hooversailingclub.com or contact me at ggiessler@camtaylor.com

Luperon Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a travel destination jewel in the Caribbean but it also has its challenges. The Dominican Republic has thirty percent of its citizens living below the poverty line. Also, the Dominican Republic shares a border with Haiti which is one of the poorest, least developed and least stable countries in the Americas. Outside of the resorts of Punta Cana, Puerta Plata and many other resort areas there are people struggling to find ways to make money and support their families. Though I would like to as some point experience the resorts of the Dominican Republic, the last three years we have been there we have helped a few individuals outside of Luperon a small town in the Dominican Republic. Our goal of the trip was to have a vacation where we had a nice equilibrium between work and play.

Our group consisted of fifteen people from different parts of the United States but predominately living in Columbus, Ohio. The trip have been a mission of First Community Church and Akita International, an affiliation with Camp Akita in Southeastern, Ohio near Logan.

While in the Dominican Republic we built a home for a family with four children. It was the first year we took a home from the beginning stages to completion. It was definitely a gratifying experience to leave the project finished and to see them express their excitement. Though none of us have much experience in construction we all did a good job of quickly learning the necessary steps for completion. More importantly we had the help of what we now consider some good Dominican Friends, Adolfo, Carlos, Edwin, Franuelle, and Joselito. Each year without fail they come to help us without any monetary reward. It has been a fun experience building relationships with them as the year’s progress and the project continues to grow.

We also were able see some of the most amazing beaches and waterfalls. We were close to the Luperon Beach Resort where after a hot day of working on the house we were able to cool off in the ocean and enjoy the sun.

More fun than being at the beach was travelling to the twenty seven Charcos (waterfalls.) which is about a forty minute drive from Luperon. We were able to climb and descend twelve of the twenty seven falls which was not nearly enough! If you are ever able to experience the waterfalls it is a must!!! It is definitely one of the more enjoyable experiences I have had while travelling.

To learn more about the project check out www.villagemountainmission.org and to learn more about the waterfalls check out www.27charcos.com.

Broadway Series

Columbus Symphony

Columbus Jazz Orchestra

Columbus Ballet

Columbus Opera

Franklin Park Conservatory

Columbus Art Museum

Golf Courses everywhere

Wonderful dining and entertainment

Great shopping at Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place, Tuttle Mall

And you thought Columbus was only Ohio State Football…………..now you know, we’re so much more!!

Root Down: Get Back to Real Food

Root Down: Get back to Real Food was the name of our presentation today at our Rotary Club. The presentation was provided by Megan Hanson the daughter of one of our Dublin-Worthington Rotary Club members Dr. Dave Hanson.

The presentation was based upon what we can do as consumers to eat more whole foods, reduce the intake of processed foods and sugary beverages. As well, her presentation touched upon teaching yourself and others how to cook. In doing so, you could also shop at local Farmer’s markets and support grocers who make it their business, to supply healthy, local foods.

Also, the presentation focused on an organization that Megan started called RootdownLA where their mission is to confront obesity in and related health issues in South Los Angeles, by engaging youth in educational experiences and skills training necessary to build a healthy food community.

One of the topics in Megan’s presentation regarding childhood obesity in Los Angeles is the fact that many of the economically depressed areas of South Los Angeles are filled with more liquor stores, fast food restaurants, corner carryout’s and other food franchises that do not give people an opportunity for healthier alternatives. I applaud Megan’s efforts in her attempts to educate the youth of South Los Angeles and her attempts to build a stronger community through working with the youth.

I found the presentation very stimulating because in our not now…right now instant gratification culture many of us, inclusive of myself, have found easier ways to eat unhealthy “fast” foods than enjoying healthier alternatives. Megan’s presentation has planted the seed in my head to work towards being a better me.

Rotary International and The Dublin-Worthington Rotary

Rotary International is a service club organization that helps provide humanitarian efforts, encourage high ethical standards, and support peace throughout the world. The organization promotes commitment to high ethical standards in life and business with the Rotary Four Way Test:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

I have been fortunate enough to be involved with a club organization in Columbus, Ohio called the Rotary Club of Dublin-Worthington. Dublin and Worthington are suburbs in the Columbus Metropolitan area. Being a member of the Rotary Club of Dublin-Worthington has given me ways to engage in different activities to help better or community and surrounding areas. As well, I have been able to meet individuals that have become good friends. It is always enjoyable to be associated with like-minded people that together can make changes for the greater good. I am proud to say that I am member of this particular club because of what we have accomplished as a whole and our involvement in the community.

Ellie Kovalcik: United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation

“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” –Mohandas Ghandi-

I received a letter today from a family acquaintance, Matt Kovalcik, regarding their third annual Charity Golf Outing for his young daughter Ellie, who has been diagnosed with a Mitochondrial disease. As Matt mentions in the brochure in the letter To Ellie with Love, he states, “we could either let it consume us or we could join in the fight to help find a cure and try to make the struggle a little easier in the lives of other families in our same situation.”

I have supported Ellie and the event in the past by playing in the golf outing once and making a charitable contribution the second year (I don’t play golf very well). I figured it would be a good idea to introduce information about the disease and the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation to help spread the word and possibly spark an interest in support of Ellie and others with this disease.

If you are interested in participating and/or making a contribution to Ellie or the foundation you can read the brochure by clicking here or check out the website www.umdf.org/kgwpgolfouting.

Central Ohio Luxury Home Network

In July I had the opportunity to sit in on a bus tour for the Central Ohio Luxury Home Network. The Luxury Home Network is group of experienced Realtors from companies including Cam Taylor Realtors, Keller Williams, Coldwell Banker King Thompson, Remax, Dooley & Co., New Albany Realty, and HER Real Living. All the Realtors involved have had many years of experience in the Columbus, Ohio Luxury home market. Many of the agents involved have expertise marketing in certain areas of town but sell homes throughout all of central Ohio. In July’s tour we covered the northern arc of Columbus, inclusive of luxury homes in Worthington, Powell, southern Delaware County and Dublin. More specifically in subdivisions of Deep Run, Medick Estates, Old Worthington, Woodlands of Loch Lomond, Falcon Ridge, Woods on Seldom Seen, Wingate Farms, Olentangy Crossing, Golf Village Estates, and Wingate Farms. Though the tour was longer than expected I had the opportunity to listen to some of the finest Realtors in Central Ohio. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to do so again!

One of the highlights of the tour was listening to Geoff Ortlip, of Planned Communities, Inc. give a presentation on their new developments in Delaware county named Olentangy Crossing and Olentangy Falls. I have always been fascinated in watching how land is developed and redeveloped and the processes that take place within that realm. To see how someone can envision a development from seeing a space, create a blueprint, and then have the plan executed is an interesting an amazing process to me. I look forward to being able to continue to see the lots being purchased and new homes being built. The area is seeing tremendous amount of growth with companies such as Kroger, OSU Medical Center, Ohio Health, Columbus State, CITI Bank and many other businesses coming to the area.

We also were able to see two new masterpiece homes built by“Housewright” Builders, Paul Craver. The attention to detail in both homes was amazing every square foot of the home was masterfully created and executed with the finest of finishes.

If you are interested in learning more you can contact Greg or Phil Giessler of Cam Taylor Realtors or any of the other fine real estate agents involved in the Central Ohio Luxury Home Network.

What I realized I like most about the real estate profession is the ability to meet new people.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet Dotty, Dotty (with a y not an I!) She is a docent for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Dotty has spent over twenty five years with the Columbus Zoo. She is very energetic and enthusiastic about the Zoo, Jack Hanna, and the organization within the zoo called Partners for Conservation. (PIC)

Jack Hanna was the Executive Director for the Columbus Zoo for fourteen years and now is the Director Emeritus. You may have seen him on Shows like Ellen Degeneres, Anderson Cooper 360, Entertainment Tonight, and the David Letterman Show to name a few. Jack Hanna with the help of many others in the community has made the Columbus Zoo one of the premier entertainment, educational, and conservation establishments in the world.

Partners in Conservation was started in attempts to reach out and help assist in conservation efforts in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project helps in educating the local people about wildlife and raise money for conservation and humanitarian efforts.

I am always amazed about what you can learn, especially when you do not expect it. I went to the listing appointment and left with a new wealth of knowledge. Many people have a positive impact in this world and it is extremely gratifying to know that there is a group of those people right here in Columbus, Ohio!

I have resided in Olentangy Highlands for more than 25 years and have been running/jogging about a half mile for most of those years on public roads to access the main trails. Now we can access directly. Olentangy Highlands was built in the 1970's and includes over 400 homes in the $200,000 to $400,000 price range. Just search by subdivision from our web site at www.daveanddan.com. The new trail access also serves the Stilson Highlands and Potters Creek Subdivisions of Worthington. This is a beautiful trail system to which Gregg Giessler of Cam Taylor and I spend lots of time and miles as we both train to run a marathon. Gregg of course is much faster than I!

This event is initiated by the City of Worthington each summer to encourage neighbors to come together and have fun as a community.

In my neighborhood on Evening Street and the surrounding streets, we had a lot of neighbors of various ages and stages in life join together for the food and festivities. One very popular group of visitors each year are the Worthington Firefighters. They always show up in style with their big shiny fire truck for the kids to tour.

I look forward to this event each year because it’s a time when we can come together as a community and get to know our neighbors better and start new friendships. There’s something to be said about not only knowing who your neighbors are but getting to know them.

WOW! Cam Taylor Client to Develop New Gasoline Source

Would you believe our surprise and then pride to see a photograph of Richard Sayre, currently a Professor at OSU, headlining the Science Section (Metro) of the Columbus Dispatch June 24, 2008.
Click here to read the full story.

According to the article, Richard's research into Algae as a new source for Gasoline will create a marketable product in just a very few years.

The beautiful Sayre home at 300 E South Street, Worthington is currently listed by the Cam Taylor Co. for$489,900 (see http://www.daveanddan.com featured homes). We had featured this historical home in an earlier blog.

The Sayre's will move to St Louis this fall to continue the research into Algae and bring to us all a much less expensive as well as a renewable source of gasoline for the future. We at Cam Taylor are proud to know and work with Richard. Columbus and OSU's loss will be St Louis's gain!

We met to discuss the book Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazi. We had over fifteen people who attended the first event and probably another fifteen people who signed up to be part of the discussion group. It was a very impressive turn out to say the least. The group is comprised of many Worthington residents and business owners interested in meeting new people and relationship building. The group organizer is Jeff Regensburger who works with the Worthington Library. If you are not familiar with the Worthington Libraries system it was the 2007 Library of the Year by the Gale/Library Journal .
Also sharing in the book club efforts is Kathryn Pough the director of the Worthington Chamber of Commerce. The Worthington Chamber of Commerce helps area businesses make connections to grow their business, promote economic development, and improve the dynamics of the community. The chamber has over 650 members and is comprised of individuals and businesses from Worthington and the surrounding areas. The Chamber of Commerce offers many ways to get involved with the community for more information regarding the chamber check out www.worthingtonchamber.org
